Restoration is one of those trades where the work that matters most is the work you cannot see. Anybody can haul out wet carpet. Knowing whether the wall behind it is dry, and being able to prove it, is a different skill.
Our technicians are certified through the IICRC, the Institute of Inspection, Cleaning and Restoration Certification. Below is what that actually means, in language that does not assume you work in this industry.
What the IICRC is
The IICRC is a nonprofit certifying body that writes the technical standards the restoration industry works from. Those standards are developed through a consensus process involving contractors, equipment manufacturers, insurance professionals and building scientists. They define things like how quickly a structure needs to be dried, what qualifies as clean water versus contaminated water, and when containment is required before mold work begins.
The IICRC certifies individual technicians, not companies. A person sits for coursework and an exam in a specific discipline, and keeps the credential current through continuing education. When a company says its technicians are IICRC certified, it means the people doing the work have passed those exams.
This matters because restoration is a low-barrier trade to enter. A truck and a few fans and you are in business. Certification is one of the few objective ways to tell whether the person in your house has been trained against a published standard or is working off instinct.
The disciplines that apply to your loss
Water damage restoration
Covers the fundamentals: identifying the source, classifying the water by contamination level, classifying the loss by how much material is wet and how porous it is, and knowing what can be dried in place versus what has to come out. This is the foundation for nearly every water damage job we run.
Applied structural drying
The engineering side. Drying a building is a controlled process involving temperature, humidity, air movement and time, and the equipment has to be sized to the space. Trained technicians calculate the required dehumidification capacity instead of setting out a standard number of machines and hoping. They also take daily moisture readings on the same marked spots, which is how you demonstrate the structure is actually reaching dry standard rather than just feeling dry to the touch.
Mold remediation
Covers containment, negative air pressure, safe removal of contaminated materials, and the critical distinction between remediation and simply cleaning a surface. Spraying a visible patch does nothing about what is growing inside a wall cavity. Proper mold inspection and remediation starts by finding the moisture source, because mold is a symptom, not the disease.
Fire and smoke restoration
Smoke residues behave differently depending on what burned and how hot. Protein residue from a kitchen fire, dry soot from a fast-burning fire, and wet smoke from a slow smoldering one each require different cleaning chemistry. Applying the wrong method can drive the residue deeper into a surface and set the staining permanently. This is a large part of why fire and smoke work should not be a general cleaning job.
The same training principles carry into related work, including sewage and category three water cleanup and sanitization and disinfection, where the difference between clean and sanitized is a matter of protocol and dwell time, not effort.
Why a homeowner should care
- The work gets finished properly. A structure that was dried to standard stays dry. One that was dried until it looked fine can produce a musty smell, cupped flooring or growth behind the baseboard weeks later, usually after everyone has been paid and gone home.
- You get told the truth about scope. Trained technicians know what genuinely has to be removed and what can be saved. That cuts both ways. It prevents unnecessary demolition, and it prevents leaving contaminated material in place because pulling it out is inconvenient.
- Nobody makes it worse. Running the wrong equipment, skipping containment, or cleaning smoke residue with the wrong product can turn a repairable loss into a replacement.
Why an insurance adjuster cares
Adjusters review a lot of restoration files. What they are looking for is evidence that the work was necessary, appropriate to the loss, and correctly scoped.
Certified technicians produce that evidence as a matter of habit: photographs before and during, moisture maps, daily readings logged by location, equipment counts with run times, and a scope written in the standard line-item estimating format carriers use. When a file arrives complete and consistent with published industry standards, it moves. When it arrives as a handwritten total with no supporting data, it stalls. Licensed, bonded and insured
We are licensed to do this work in Arizona, we carry a bond, and we carry liability insurance. Ask any contractor who enters your property for proof of all three, and be genuinely cautious about anyone who cannot produce it, particularly the people who show up unsolicited after a storm.
